Weather

Nearly every kind of climate is experienced in Italy by virtue of its lofty mountain peaks and flat plains. Generally speaking, the rains lash the country from November through May. Heavy snowfalls cap the alpine ranges with snow during the bitterly cold months from December through March though tourists will be able to see the peaks of the Alps and the Gran Sasso covered with snow well into May.

Spring is a delightful season and generally lasts during April, May and June when the entire peninsula is blanketed with green winter wheat and the greening vineyards. This is the time when wild tulips grow so plentifully from the valley of Aosta in the northwest right down to the olive groves of Basilicata and Apulia.

Cloudless blue skies reign over a markedly hot and dry summer throughout most of Italy when the beaches draw hordes of natives as well as tourists. The early morning mists that hang over the Amalfi coast and many other coastal areas in spring, are gone, and the dry summer air finds relief only in the mountainous areas, on the beaches and in the lake district .

Autumn is a season for poets, when the colors become more pastel in tone and the winds begin to pick up in velocity.
